In our self defense class for young kids ages 3-5 years, we concentrate on developing focus. Society is filled with many audio and visual distractions: it is important to begin nurturing focus as a habit at a young age. In every self defense class the Three Rules of Focus – focus the eyes, focus the mind, focus the body – are reinforced and strengthened. The class consists of positive reinforcement drills and relays which help in developing coordination, problem solving, team work, and memory. In the Wee Warrior martial arts program, we also begin to teach basic self defense principles. Contrary to popular belief, self defense is not purely about brute strength or over powering an assailant. Young kids can defend themselves using a few simple principles that focus on getting the attention of others that can provide help. Our students enjoy this karate class as they achieve patches to decorate their uniform with their successes.

Focus is a thinking skill that allows one to start an activity and finish without succumbing to distractions. Television, Youtube, and Video games give the illusion of developing focus because the user can spend hours viewing and participating. But because the images are rapidly changing these things reduce attention span and the patience it takes to focus on completing real world tasks. In the Self Defense class for small children, we use a variety of activities that help increase the children’s attention span; thereby, improving their focus.
